Bamboo Community Pavilion
Lio Lab: A South-North Design-Build Studio

How can architectural educators develop international design-build collaborations that build bridges of community care across south-north boundaries? Bamboo Community Pavilion is the inaugural effort of Lio Lab, a traveling design-build studio organized annually by Peter Zuroweste in collaboration with students, staff, faculty, and UPN (Universidad Privada Del Norte, Lima, Peru) and ISU (Iowa State University, Ames, IA) and . Lio Lab’s mission is to work with communities of marginalized Peruvian neighborhoods to design and build projects with a positive impact on daily life. With the support of Espacios A+, a social responsibility non-profit specializing in improving Peruvian educational spaces, the 1,500sf shade structure was built over a 20-day period for Fe Y Alegria #34, a K-12 school in the Chorrillos neighborhood of Lima. Built of regionally sourced bamboo, local jute textiles, and cedar foundation components custom-lathed in Iowa, the project brings materials and people together across north-south boundaries through a shared process of collective worlding.
