This 4th-year B.S.Arch studio at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign consists of two parts: 1) the creation of A Manual for Climate Positive Concrete Housing featuring analyses of built precedents, concrete construction methodologies, and carbon sequestering concrete material systems, and 2) submission of design project to the 2022 HABITAT Design Competition: Climate Positive Concrete Housing. Eight projects correlating to eight separate climate regions within the US were developed, with an emphasis on designing housing system prototypes capable of adapting to a variety of social and environmental conditions. Strategies for rapidly deploying low-cost, high-quality, climate-positive, modular concrete housing were construced in contrast to luxury housing through careful consideration of community-driven vs. developer-driven value systems.
